Q&A: Is it the estrogen in birth control pills that causes weight gain?07.25.10

Question by Daisy Buchanen: Is it the estrogen in birth control pills that causes weight gain?
I know that everyone has different reactions to birth control, but has switching to a pill with a lower dosage of estrogen been shown to have a lesser frequency of causing weight gain? Thanks!

The weight gain is caused by the fact that birth control pills fool your body into thinking its pregnant, therefore you tend to gain that ” baby weight” regardless of the dose of estrogen.

How to gain energy to exercise during perimenopause?07.11.10

Question by casper: How to gain energy to exercise during perimenopause?
I am 31 and have been going thru perimenopause for going on 4 years. I know the way to keep from gaining weight is thru exercise. I use to be able to exercise fairly regularly. Now I have a really hard time getting the energy to do it. Is there any way to help get more energy?

Be sure to get enough sleep. Eat a healthy diet. Try to stay away from caffiene and sugar. These will give you a rush of energy, but then you’ll feel more tired once the effects wear off. And, exercise will give you more energy, if you can force yourself to do it. Try telling yourself that you’ll do just 10 minutes. Once you start, you’ll likely end up doing more than that and feel better.

Adults only. Do you have any experience with weight gain from menopause?04.30.10

I am eating the same things I have always eaten, but have gained weight. My internist said it’s hormone changes. Any input on turning it around (besides diet and exercise).
