Q&A: How much soy is safe to have per day without it being a risk to a woman’s estrogen level?09.05.10

Question by bbrat: How much soy is safe to have per day without it being a risk to a woman’s estrogen level?
I read that the soy phytoestrogen can mimic the human estrogen, high levels of which can be toxic and may even lead to breast cancer. What exactly are the high levels of soy?

If that were true, then every vegan, man or woman would have breast cancer. As would every Asian, man or woman. And that’s simply not so.

The plant-based estrogens in soy are similar to but not the same as human estrogens, and don’t have that negative side effect. In fact, they have protective effects for a woman, particularly preimenopausal and post-menopausal women, as they help to prevent or minimize osteoporosis.

The estrogen-like and progesterone-like substances in HRT, though, are an entirely different matter.

Q&A: Is it safe to take estrogen progesteron and herbs for hot flashes together?07.21.10

Question by TB: Is it safe to take estrogen progesteron and herbs for hot flashes together?
I am on estrogen alone and it is not working for me. Doctor cannot help, doesn’t feel I know what I am talking about. I had a hysterectomy 6 years ago(ovaries out) and have been miserable ever since. A friend suggested adding progesterone and herbs. I do not flash, just live in a oven. Is it safe to take all 3 together?

Progesterone can be taken with certain herbs in limited dosages, but if you are also taking any prescriptions for it (or a prescription level Progesterone), I would recommend that you ask a pharmacist if there are any interactions listed between the drugs and supplements you’re taking. Doctors and pharmacists both have access to a database of drug and supplement interactions and they can tell you quickly if you can safely take them together or not…. anyone here will just have a best guess from searching on the internet (which isn’t always accurate, as we all know) ;-) Good luck!

Is it safe to take Estrogen after having had a complete hysterectomy for endometrial cancer?07.11.10

Question by bd2007: Is it safe to take Estrogen after having had a complete hysterectomy for endometrial cancer?
I’m 44 and am at a higher risk for osteoporosis without any estrogen. However, endometrial cancer is estrogen dependent, so my thought is it wouldn’t be wise to take it for risk of recurrence elsewhere. I can deal with the other menopausal symptoms, but am concerned about bone loss since I would typically have had several more years of estrogen before hitting menopause. Any alternatives or thoughts?

I would say that it is probably not safe for someone who has had endometrial cancer to take estrogen replacement therapy but the only way to find out for sure is to double check with your dr to see what they think.
