Perimenopause Help

Question by Dutch: How do you know if it is depression or perimenopause? Can you share your perimenopausal symptoms?
I do have depression and it seems to recur every few years, this seems different though. I do feel depressed, and anxious (restless). I have no interest in sex and not a great deal of interest in anything else either. I forget things, put things off, can’t seem to think straight. I sweat, but I wouldn’t say they are hot flashes, more like breaking out in an uncontrollable sweat. There’s more things, but I was just wondering what you other ladies may be experiencing. We identify 2 types of depression
1. MInor Depression
- Average loss of appetite
- Loss of energy
- Loss of motivation
The person continues to do daily activities and is not pathological.

2. Major depression
- Pervades every single aspect of life and person does not work at all. The person having this issue is also aware of this.

There are normally 5 symptoms. If any 5 of this is experience for more than 2 weeks you are having depression
1.Depressed mood day after day
2. Diminished interest in any activity whatsover
3. Significant weight fluctuations without any dieting
4. Insomnia or Hypersomnia (Loss of Sleep)
5. If you convert normal restlessness to physical activity like cleaning cupboards always, shaking hand in a rhythmic fashion etc
6. Severe fatigue or loss in energy
7. Huge guilt and thoughts of burden on society
8. Diminished ability to take decisions
9. Suicidal thoughts and attempts

Reasons for this can be
1.Stress
2. Traumatic events like death
3. Long illness
4. Excessive meditation
5. Alcohol and drug abuse
6. Hormonal imbalances (Menopause)
7. Chronic patterns of negative thinking

Anxiety is an outcome from any of these and hence its ideal if you seek medical attention.

I am 48 years old and continue to have monthly cycles very painful ones, I might add. However, I experience perimenopause symptoms, (i.e. night sweats, sleeplessness, irritability, power surges (hot flashes) more during the monthly menstruation process. Is this normal and what can I do to combat it?

of course its normal. your getting old.

and you can take a water pill. alot of people take hydrochlorothiazide, which is a prescription waterpill.

Virtually the same list of symptoms for menopause. However perimenopause is not as regular in the cycles/periods of menopausing. There may be a week or a month of menopause type symptoms then nothing for 4 months. Also perimenopause typically starts anywhere from 10-2 yrs before true menopause sets in. It can start as early as late 30′s or as late as 50′s. The older you are when you have your last child, the longer it will be till perimenopause/menopause sets in. Also ages for both run consistent in families. So if mom and Aunty both were in full blown menopause by 45, then likely you will be too.

Question by fergilicious: Are there similarities between the symptoms of early pregnancy & perimenopause?
I am 36 and 6 days late. I already have children and was not planning on more, so I do however recognize the symptoms of pregnancy. I have taken several home pregnancys tests and they all result in a negative reading? I did have unprotected sex so pregnancy could be a possibility. My mom go through menopause early she is convinced that I am going through perimenopause. Anyone every experience similar, or know anything about this I have been doing some research and cannot find much information. HELP!

Yes, there are lots of similarities. I had this happen when I was about your age – skipped one period completely, and was sure I was pregnant. The primary difference is that when I was pregnant my breasts were very sensitive, and with perimenopause, that doesn’t happen so much.

Question by Night Wind: What are you perimenopause symptoms and treatments?
I’m 43 years old and seem to be starting into perimenopause. Tonight I have tingling in my cheeks and a hot feeling, although I’m not hot to touch. I don’t know if it’s symptoms of perimenopause or to do with my thyroid. The thyroid is gone and today they said my thyroid is low so they are increasing the dose. I hope that helps. Has anyone else experienced that with perimenopause? The hot flushing has gone on all evening. I’m tremendously tired lately during the daytime. I don’t have health insurance so my doctor is treating me conservativly.

You periods will change, heavier or lighter or longer or more irregular. Every person’s hot flashes may be different. Insomnia is a big part of menopause, even above and not associated with the hot flashes. It seems that I don’t need as much sleep as I used to.

I was always against taking exogenous estrogen, until the hot flashes hit with a vengence. First I tried all the over the counter stuff, which, by the way, does not work in the least. Now that is what I get a “jones” for-my estrogen patches. I always keep an extra estrogen patch in my purse, just in case I need extra.

I understand that the estrogen pills are not very expensive, as they are not under patent, and they can prescribe the generic ones for you. WalMart sells all generic drugs for four dollars a prescription.
